The H‑1B nonimmigrant visa is the most frequently used visa category for work authorization in the United States.  The foreign national must have at least a Bachelor’s Degree (or the equivalent in experience) and a job offer in the United States.  The job must require a Bachelor’s Degree. The H-1B visa is initially valid for three years.  It can be extended up to two years at a time, with a maximum of six years.  The foreign national’s spouse and minor children are eligible for the H-4 visa, which does not allow employment.
